Red Hill House on Mauna Loa is reopened by Hawaii National Volcanoes Park
In Hawaii National Volcanoes Park's rugged wilderness, hikers can now stay at the recently renovated Red Hill Lodge, which is situated at 10,035 feet above sea level. The park reopened Mauna Loa Trail from the trailhead from Mauna Loa Lookout to Pu'u'ula'ula after Mauna Loa's eruption last year (Red Hill). Hikers must complete a challenging 7.5-mile climb from Mauna Lookout at a high height with minimal shade in order to reach the cabin. This trail was originally referred to be “the most difficult hike in Hawaii” by Frommer's Travel Guides.
The Red Hill Cabin is not accessible to everyone. The National Park Service website advises that visitors to Mauna Loa “should be well equipped, skilled in the wilderness/high altitude walking, and physically fit.”
How can you make reservations at the Red Hill Cabin in Hawaii?
Hikers can only spend a maximum of three consecutive nights at the cabin with a permit, which they can obtain at the visitor center. Eight bunks with thin foam pads, linked water collection tanks, and composting toilets are provided in the cabin. Before obtaining their permits, hikers are advised to confirm the current water levels.
What you should be aware of before hiking the Mauna Loa Road path
The trailhead on Mauna Loa Road does not have any drinking water available. The trip down Mauna Loa Road to the trailhead from the Volcano Visitor Center takes about an hour. For the first time since 1984, Mauna Loa started to erupt on the evening of November 27. Many Native Hawaiians saw the stunning occurrence as the manifestation of their goddess Pele, despite the fact that many visitors flocked to see it.
Last week, the volcano's status was downgraded to Green/Normal, but there are still “severe risks” like fresh lava that has buried path markings, fragile layers of hardened lava that are prone to collapsing, and pockets of volcanic gas. As a result, both the area above the cabin and the whole of the Mauna Loa Trail are still off-limits.
