The 14-year-old ruins the 210-run target with a 35-ball century and 166 runs, joining Jaiswal for the first wicket. The visiting team’s fifties from Gill and Buttler are in vain.
There are wonderful nights. They’re so magical, they’re unbelievable. One such evening was Monday. But the night was starless. However, that was irrelevant. One of cricket’s future stars blazed throughout Sawai Mansigh Stadium and beyond.
The Rajasthan Royals defeated the Gujarat Titans by an incredible eight wickets, thanks to Vaibhav Suryavanshi’s one of the most spectacular knocks in IPL history. With 4.1 overs remaining, the host chased down GT’s 209 for four.
In addition, the 14-year-old became the youngest centurion in the league (101, 38b, 7×4, 11×6). And at 35 balls, it was the second-fastest hundred.
Yes, the numbers, the records. They are important, but not quite as important as the viewer’s delight or the way he batted so early.
Suryavanshi crushed one of the tournament’s best attacks, displaying confidence much beyond his years. One of his better shots came over long-off against Prasidh Krishna, a seamer who has been in outstanding form, but he was especially harsh on the leg-side.
Another incredible six came as he pulled off Washington Sundar over deep square-leg. In actuality, he dealt primarily with boundaries. Rashid Khan was the only bowler who caused him to hesitate.
In less than 12 overs, Suryavanshi and fellow left-hander Yashasvi Jaiswal (70 not out, 40b, 9×4, 2×6) had an opening-wicket stand of 166.
He had brought his team closer to what would just be the third victory of the season by the time Prasidh’s yorker eventually stopped his amazing knock.
As the child made his way to his dressing room, every GT outfielder rushed to congratulate him, and even coach Rahul Dravid was thrilled.
B. Sai Sudharsan (39, 30b, 4×4, 1×6) and Shubman Gill (84, 50b, 5×4, 4×6) contributed 93 for the first wicket earlier, and the outstanding top three once again produced for GT. This year, they have amassed 541. After that, Jos Buttler (50 not out, 26b, 3×4, 4×6) returned to his home field for seven seasons before the Royals unexpectedly let him leave.
Nobody anticipated the unexpected knock that would be made by a teenager.
