Liverpool establish a massive 13-point lead while Arsenal are held by Forest
LONDON, Feb 26 (Reuters) – Liverpool extended their Premier League lead to 13 points with a 2-0 win against Newcastle United, while Arsenal’s closest chase ended in a 0-0 draw at Nottingham Forest on Wednesday.
While the weekend’s results seemed to have put Liverpool in a position to claim the trophy, Arne Slot’s team now looks invincible.
Dominik Szoboszlai and Alexis Mac Allister scored goals in each half, securing a victory for Liverpool over Newcastle, who fell to sixth place in the standings.
In the 11th minute, Szoboszlai scored after Luis Diaz made a cutback for the Hungarian, whose shot found the net past Nick Pope.
In the 63rd minute, Mac Allister extended the home team’s lead after being found by Mohamed Salah.
After a challenging series of matches, Liverpool managed to secure a draw against Aston Villa and victories over Manchester City and Newcastle. Only a disastrous decline could prevent the club from clinching its 20th English league title.
Mac Allister stated, “I believe the ambition to clinch trophies is propelling us.” “This season, we know we might have the chance to win some, so we’re very happy to work hard and hope we can keep going.”
The London club Arsenal was demoralized by its weekend loss to West Ham, and although manager Mikel Arteta promised to continue pursuing the title, a 0–0 draw against Forest further dashed their hopes.
Liverpool has 67 points from 28 matches, while Arsenal sits at 54 but has one match in hand. The forest consists of 48 points.
As Erling Haaland netted the sole goal at Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester City ascended back into the top four.
In the 12th minute, Haaland scored from a short distance, making him the second player ever to net at least 20 goals in his first three Premier League seasons.
Ruud van Nistelrooy, playing for Manchester United, also achieved that accomplishment between the 2001–02 and 2003–04 seasons.
Despite being reduced to 10 players, Manchester United secured a thrilling 3-2 victory over struggling Ipswich Town, thanks to a goal from Harry Maguire.
An awful defensive blunder allowed Ipswich to take an early lead with a goal from Jaden Philogene.
After 26 minutes, however, United reversed the match’s momentum: an own goal from Ipswich captain Sam Morsy and a close-range finish by Matthijs de Ligt put the hosts ahead.
Two minutes before halftime, Patrick Dorgu received a red card for a late tackle on Omari Hutchinson. Meanwhile, Philogene netted another goal, leveling the score for Ipswich, who were in third-to-last place.
However, with only ten players, United managed to earn the points as Maguire appeared at a crucial moment to worsen Ipswich’s relegation predicament.
United manager Ruben Amorim told the media, “I’m not frustrated today.” “We managed the game and from the very first minute, I sensed that the players were making an effort to play; we succeeded in scoring two goals.”
While United sit in 14th place with 33 points, Ipswich find themselves five points adrift of safety following their sixth defeat in seven matches.
Ipswich coach Kieran McKenna stated, “There’s no doubt about it; this was a massive missed opportunity.”
Jake O’Brien netted his first goal for Everton as the Merseyside team came back to level 1-1 against Brentford, thereby extending their Premier League unbeaten streak to seven matches since David Moyes returned as manager.
