LeBron James reacts to Mirra Andreeva’s Indian Wells victory
After the teenage tennis sensation claimed that she was inspired by one of his previous interviews, LeBron James declared that he was “happy to have helped” Mirra Andreeva win the Indian Wells title on Sunday.
The 17-year-old Andreeva, who also won the trophy at the Dubai Championships two weeks earlier, defeated world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka in Sunday’s final to become the youngest woman to win back-to-back WTA 1000 (formerly Tier I) titles since Martina Hingis in 1997.
After losing to Sabalenka 6-2 in the first set, where she won less than half of her serve points, Andreeva had to rally.
“I was listening to an interview with LeBron James and he was saying that even if you don’t play your 100% or even if you don’t feel like you’re 100% physically, I’m going to choose to be 100% mentally,” Andreeva said in an interview with the tennis channel on Monday.
He claimed it was what made us champions, so I made an effort to follow suit. I eventually overcame the fact that it didn’t work at first so that I could truly go for my shots and behave like a legend.
James, the league’s all-time top scorer, four-time NBA champion, and four-time MVP, praised Andreeva and maintained that she should take full credit.
He posted “Congratulations!” on an Instagram Story. “I’m glad I could help, but really, YOU accomplished THAT! All of your effort, motivation, and commitment to your art. GO FORWARD! Aim for excellence.
