Met Office Issues Rare Freezing Rain Warning as NI Braces for Temperature Drop!
The Met Office cautioned that freezing rain, an uncommon occurrence that can knock down trees and ground planes, is expected in Northern Ireland and other parts of the United Kingdom.
The UK rarely experiences the unusual weather phenomenon, which is known as an ice storm in North America, due to the extremely specialized conditions required.
Rainfall that travels through different temperatures in the atmosphere is “supercooled” as it descends from the sky.
High in the atmosphere, it begins as sleet or hail, but as it descends, it melts through a layer of warmer air before refreezing once more through a layer of colder air close to the surface.
As overcast and chilly air continues to be brought by high pressure to the north and east, these circumstances may be observed in the days ahead.
Honor Criswick, a Met Office forecaster, stated: “As this area of rain transitions into colder air, there is a chance we could see some hill snow.”
There’s even a danger of freezing rain, so be cautious because there might be some frozen areas by morning.
“However, colder nights are likely compared to recent nights because most towns and cities will just about drop below freezing for many.”
In contrast to recent nights, she said that tonight will be “chillier on offer – likely to see some frost, possibly even some ice too, some outbreaks of rain starting to push into Cornwall, parts of Northern Ireland, perhaps the far South West of Wales later.”
Ms. Criswick went on: “There is still a likelihood of some slippery areas since there is still a danger of freezing rain as well.
However, there is an area of rain distant from this cloud, and as the cloud is disintegrating a little more, we might get a little more sunshine by tomorrow afternoon.
However, temperatures are still around the same, if not somewhat lower, in certain locations. Therefore, even though there is a potential of some additional sunshine tomorrow, it will still be quite cold, so we will need to stay warm to enjoy it.
Because the raindrop briefly spreads out across the surface before freezing and covering it with a layer of transparent ice, freezing rain can have dramatic effects.
According to the Met Office, the coating of ice on the ground effectively turns roads and pathways into ice rinks, and the weight of the ice can occasionally be heavy enough to knock down trees and power lines.
The possibility of icicles growing across an airplane’s wings makes it exceedingly dangerous for airplanes as well.
The ice is incredibly clear and is sometimes called “black ice” since it is so hard to see, making it dangerous for both automobiles and pedestrians.
