A local bowler clean bowled Indian cricket team vice-captain Shubman Gill in the nets prior to the Asia Cup 2025 first match against the United Arab Emirates, according to a PTI report. According to the report, during his practice session, Gill played several solid strokes against the fast bowlers and appeared to be in good form. With impressive-looking cover drives, the batter displayed his signature grace. However, one of the local net bowlers slipped past his defenses and uprooted his off stump with a stunning delivery, effectively defeating him. Although Gill’s inclusion in the playing XI against the UAE is all but certain, it is still unclear if he would bat first or at number three for the team.
The highlight of India’s optional net session on Tuesday was Abhishek Sharma’s harsh yet elegant stroke play, while strength and conditioning coach Adrian Le Roux closely monitored left-arm pacer Arshdeep Singh as he went through fitness exercises.
Senior players Jasprit Bumrah, Kuldeep Yadav, Sanju Samson, and bowler Harshit Rana decided to take a break because it was an optional training day at the ICC Academy.
But the focus was squarely on Abhishek.
The teenage left-hander relied on his exceptional hand-eye coordination to blast pitches upwards, several of which landed far outside the practice facility, despite his lack of ball muscle.
Abhishek essentially transformed the nets into a “range-hitting” demonstration, a term from golf that is frequently used in cricket.
He clobbered at least 25 to 30 sixes during an hour-long batting session, making it quite tough for onlookers to look away.
After a lackluster performance on Monday, Samson chose to take it easy, so wicketkeeper Jitesh Sharma carried on with his routine.
He practiced reflex “no-look” catching drills under fielding coach T. Dilip, which include the keeper standing with hands parallel to the ground while the coach drops the ball at close range.
The task is to use only instinct and quick thinking to pluck the ball only inches before it hits the ground without seeing its trajectory.
