Neymar Breaks Down In Tears After Santos Defeat
After Santos lost to Vasco da Gama 6-0 at home, Brazil striker Neymar sobbed as he exited the field.
In addition to being the worse loss in Neymar’s career, Santos had never given up six goals at home in a Brazilian Serie A game.
Hours following Sunday’s match, coach Cleber Xavier was fired, and the eight-time winners are just two points above the relegation zone.
Philippe Coutinho, a former forward for Aston Villa and Liverpool, scored twice as Vasco won their greatest league victory in 17 years and their first in six league games.
“I’m ashamed,” Neymar declared. “Our performance has completely let me down. The fans are perfectly entitled to demonstrate, presumably without resorting to violence.
However, they have the right to cuss and insult if they so want. Our attitude on the field was awful, to put it simply.
“This is something I have never encountered in my life. Anger was the source of all the tears. Regretfully, I am unable to assist in every manner.
“I think everyone today needs to go home and think about what they want to do.”
Neymar is still the most expensive football player in the world. He paid £200 million to join Paris St-Germain from Barcelona in 2017, then in January, he returned to his childhood club after his contract with Al-Hilal, a Saudi Pro League team, expired.
Santos, 33, has scored six goals and provided three assists in 21 games across all competitions after signing a new six-month contract in June.
After suffering a hamstring injury 34 minutes into his first Serie A start of the season, Brazil’s all-time top scorer left the pitch in tears and missed the following five league games.
After working as an assistant manager for a number of Brazilian clubs and the national team, Xavier, 61, assumed leadership at the end of April.
After winning five of his 15 games as manager, Santos is now only two spots above the relegation zone, one spot above Vasco, who were moved out of the bottom four following their victory on Sunday.
After their first-ever demotion, Santos spent a year in Serie B before winning promotion back to the Brazilian top division in November.
On Sunday, August 24, they will play Bahia, who are currently in fourth position, on the road.
