English rock legend & Game of Thrones actor Wilko Johnson passed away
Wilko Johnson, an influential rock guitarist from England who performed for the band Dr. Feelgood and was 75 years old this week, passed away. Wilko Johnson has passed away, the statement said. “This is the announcement we never intended to deliver, and we do it with a very heavy heart,” it said. “On Monday, November 21, he died at home. I appreciate you keeping the family’s privacy in mind at this extremely sad time.
Johnson passed away on Monday at his home in England, according to a statement made by his family on social media.
Johnson, who was born John Peter Wilkinson in 1947, participated in the 1971 formation of Dr. Feelgood in his native Canvey Island, Essex. Jean-Jacques Burnel of the Stranglers, a punk rock band, called the group “a bridge between the old times and the punk times.” Johnson was renowned for his energetic performance style and percussion-based guitar playing.
“People question how you accomplished that. Johnson explained his unique playing style to a crowd at a music demo in 2012 before starting to play a series of “stabbing chords” and blues riffs. “It’s quite simple, you see, it’s like riding a bike, easy to do, hard to explain,” he said.
Johnson stated in 2013 that after receiving a diagnosis of pancreatic cancer and being informed that it was fatal, he had decided against chemotherapy. Irene Knight, Johnson’s wife, and childhood sweetheart passed away from cancer in 2004, the Independent reported.
Johnson performed a number of farewell performances throughout the subsequent years.
But at the Q Awards ceremony in London in 2014, Johnson announced that he was cancer-free. He said that an 11-hour surgery to remove a tumor weighing almost 7 pounds was performed on him when he was getting an Icon Award. During his winning speech, he remarked, “That’s the size of a baby,” to the audience.
If there is a lesson to be learned from this tale, it is that nothing can be predicted.
As Ser Ilyn Payne, a mute knight and king’s executioner in the HBO series “Game of Thrones,” Johnson continued to perform while simultaneously making his acting debut. He gained notoriety on the show for his menacing gaze and for killing Ned Stark, one of its most adored characters.
Musicians poured their appreciation for Johnson into statements after his passing on Wednesday.
Billy Bragg, an activist, and English singer stated on Twitter that Wilko Johnson was a pioneer of punk. His presence, which was twitchy, confrontational, and out of control, was unlike anything we had ever seen in UK pop.
Led Zeppelin’s Jimmy Page expressed his sadness upon learning of Johnson’s loss. He claimed to have gone to one of Johnson’s final performances in Camden Town, London, in 2013.
Page tweeted, “The atmosphere was electric.” “His farewell tour was originally billed for this performance. But thankfully, he kept entertaining audiences up until fairly recently. We will all miss him, and I really admired him.
Franz Ferdinand’s lead singer Alex Kapranos described Johnson as “intelligent, smart, and an extraordinary storyteller.”
Kapranos wrote on social media that “His distinctive, wired playing & stage persona captivated & inspired many guitarists, myself included.” His influence will be felt for a very long time.
