Elon Musk vs. Sam Altman: OpenAI’s Bold Move to Buy Twitter
To acquire Sam Altman’s OpenAI, a group led by Elon Musk offered $97.4 billion.
The long-running dispute between Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla, and Sam Altman, the CEO of ChatGPT, regarding the future of the start-up they co-founded in 2015, has been exacerbated by an offer of $97.4 billion to acquire the non-profit that owns OpenAI.
In a surprising turn of events, Altman turned down the offer and countered by offering to purchase X, formerly known as Twitter, which Musk later bought and became private in 2022.
Altman said on social media, “No thank you, but if you want, we can buy Twitter for $9.74 billion.” Musk’s offer to purchase OpenAI is ten times higher than Altman’s offer to take over X. The company’s depreciation is reflected in this.
Musk acquired X for $44 billion in 2022.
An old video of Altman calling him “Scam Altman” was also posted by Musk. In the video, Altman answers “no” when Senator Kennedy asks, “You make a lot of money, do you?”
Musk has already shown concern over Altman’s financial situation. Donald Trump announced this month the $500 billion Stargate project, which is a collaboration between cloud giant Oracle, Japanese behemoth SoftBank, and OpenAI, the company that created ChatGPT, to develop artificial intelligence infrastructure. Musk said shortly after that the group lacked the funds.
Musk’s assertions were rejected by OpenAI CEO Salm Altman, who instead invited him to tour the first location, which is now under construction. “This is fantastic for the nation,” he remarked. I hope you will prioritize us in your new position, even though I know that what is best for the nation isn’t always what is best for your businesses.”
OpenAI claims that to obtain the funding required to create the finest artificial intelligence models, it must change from a nonprofit organization to a for-profit one.
